Echeveria

Echeverias are some of the biggest stars of the succulent world. Their plump leaves spiral out from the center to create an attractive rosette with colors ranging from icy blue to ruffles tinged with pink.

Haworthia

Ridged to smooth and translucent to speckled, Haworthias are an excellent succulent option for areas with less light. While most succulents require a bright sunny window to thrive, Haworthia plants will be happy kept on the kitchen counter or your desk. These plants also require less water than many other succulents, making them an all-around easy-to-care-for succulent.

Succulent

“Succulent” is a word used to describe any type of plant with thick, squishy leaves. These plump leaves are filled with water, giving these plants the ability to thrive in areas with dry soil and little to no rainfall. Low water requirements and their adorable appearance make succulent plants great candidates for beginning plant parents and advanced plant lovers alike. While each type of succulent, from Sedum to Senecio, has its own watering and light requirements to take note of, they are all incredibly rewarding and easy to care for plants.

Sempervivum

Sempervivum, sometimes known as “hens and chicks”, semps, or houseleeks, are a succulent plant used both as a houseplant and outdoors as they are hardy to -20 degrees F (zone 5). This family of succulents are known for their diverse seasonal color, natural resilience, and their rosette leaves. Sempervivums make an interesting addition to your rock garden or landscape as they make a dense mat of rosettes with seasonal color change. As a houseplant, they are easy to care for and can stand alone or accent a succulent arrangement.

The “hens and chicks” description is derived from the way the mother rosette (hen) sends out new offsets (chicks) forming mats composed of tufted leaves in rosettes. Their name Sempervivum comes from the Latin Semper (“always”) and Vivus (“living’) giving them the common name live forever. These succulent perennials have earned that name given their tolerance for cooler climates and their many uses indoor and out.
