Congratulations on your purchase of a Succulent-Plants.com DIY Planter Box Kit! Please carefully remove your succulents from their packaging upon arrival, handling them with care to avoid damaging their leaves. Your succulents can be kept in a bright windowsill and watered weekly until the kit is ready to be used. Upon arrival, we ask that you check to make sure that all listed components are included and not missing or damaged.
When ready to start assembling your planter, prepare your workspace on a flat surface and layout your materials.
Take the plastic liner out of the wood box planter. Shake any dust or debris out. Using scissors or a knife make 2-3 slits in the bottom of the liner. This will help with drainage and airflow. You can also add a tiny layer of rocks or gravel to the bottom of the liner.
Place the liner back in the box and fill it with your cactus soil. You can add a bit of water to the soil to make it easier to plant your succulents, just enough water to dampen not soak the soil.
Next prepare your succulents. Give the succulent pots a few little squeezes to release the roots and soil. Slowly and carefully pull your succulent out of its pot. Using your fingers lightly work through the roots to remove excess soil. Some pieces of the roots may fall off, this is normal.
It can be helpful to simply place your succulents on top of the soil so you can determine how you wish to arrange them. After you know where each is going, make three little divots in the soil to mark their locations.
Take your first succulent and carefully guide its roots into a divot and cover the roots with soil. You can additionally add a few pebbles around the base of your succulent to help support the plant while you add the next two plants. Do this for each succulent.
If you did not dampen the soil earlier now would be a good time to give your succulents some water. Remember to water at the base of the plant, not over top of the leaves.
Sprinkle the remaining river gravel stone on top of the soil and arrange it around the bases of the succulents.
CARE DIRECTIONS:
Be sure to place your wood box container where it can receive plenty of bright sunlight. A few hours or less of direct sunlight.
Carefully water your succulents only when the soil and rocks are fully dry. Depending on the sunlight and humidity, your succulents usually are watered once a week or less. Remember to check the soil for dryness before you water and only water when fully dry.
Echeverias are some of the biggest stars of the succulent world. Their plump leaves spiral out from the center to create an attractive rosette with colors ranging from icy blue to ruffles tinged with pink.
Air plants, or Tillandsia species, are some of the easiest to care for houseplants. We call them “air plants” because of their tendency to live on tree branches instead of in soil. Tillandsia plants are epiphytes, meaning that they absorb water through their leaves instead of through roots. This is thanks to being covered in tiny white hairs called “trichomes,” which catch water particles from the air and hold water to their surface. The natural environment for air plants is humid southern climates, growing in the crooks and crevices of tree branches under a dappled canopy. The perfect in-home environment for an air plant is lots of humidity, making terrariums a great option, as well as plenty of bright, indirect light.
A cactus is a type of succulent plant adapted to living in the desert. Cacti (meaning more than one cactus) have even lower watering requirements than their smooth succulent cousins and are often covered in prickly hairs or spines. These hairs are actually highly modified leaves that help with water retention by reducing airflow to the surface of the cactus while the spines protect cacti from predators. The body of a cactus is actually an engorged stem filled with water, giving the plant a source of water for many weeks. These special cylindrical, flat, or round stems give cacti their distinctive silhouette that so many people love.
